Conservation Meeting Minutes 01/17/13

 Conservation Commission
  Meeting
Sharon Community Center
         January 17, 2013

Peg Arguimbau Chairman, Hank Langstroth, Elizabeth McGrath, and Stephen Cremer were the members present. Commission Members, Christine Turnbull, Linda Orel, and Keevin Geller were absent from the meeting. The Conservation Administrator, Greg Meister, was also present.

7:45 p.m. Old/New Business:

The Commission reviewed an application filing for an Extension Permit for an Order of Conditions submitted by the Applicant, Briggs Pond Homeowners Trust, c/o Leslie Koval, under
DEP File # SE-280-249, for the Briggs Pond Aquatic Vegetation Management Program.
The Applicant was absent from the meeting.
Stephen Cremer commented on a recent newspaper article about the effects related to climate change and earlier flower blooms. The article mentioned the evidence of earlier wildflower blooms along Walden Pond in Concord, MA. Stephen Cremer expressed his concern about the possibility of climate change effecting aquatic plants and questioned whether the herbicide treatment of Briggs Pond would need to occur multiple times during the season and whether that level of treatment would become an environmental hazard.
The Conservation Administrator, Greg Meister, explained that herbicide treatment is usually applied in specific locations of Briggs Pond instead of the entire area of the pond. He indicated that sonar is generally used for weed control in Briggs Pond as well as for Lake Massapoag.
Peg said that if more frequent herbicide treatment applications of Briggs Pond are requested by the Applicant sometime in the future, then it would be necessary for the Commission to address the issue.
Following the Commission’s review of the submitted application, it was the consensus of the Commission to approve the Extension Permit as requested by the Applicant under DEP File # SE-280-249, for a period of three years.
